A Purse Can Say A Lot

Today is the anniversary of my Mother's death.

Sad day.

I am really feeling it this year.  So much of her story...our story...just seems so surreal.  All of the details, and ironies make it seem almost unbelievable.  Sometimes I wonder how this could really be my life?  How did this all really happen to me?
Can I wake up yet??!

Two weeks ago I was helping my Dad clean out his garage and go through some of his old belongings.  He tossed a bag my way and told me it was my mom's and that I could have it.  I put it aside in my "take home" pile and didn't necessarily think much of it.

When I got home I opened what I thought was a random bag...and oh man...I was in for quite the shock.  Sitting before me was my mother's purse.  The exact, untouched since then, purse that she was using at the time of her death.  Talk about a time capsule!

Let me tell you about some of the things that were in there...because I think it says a lot about my Mom.

The first part I opened was her daily planner.  The most eerie part was that the date starts on May 17th so I was opening almost exactly at the same time of year that it was written.

Of course she died on the 20th so it was her to do list and activities, etc. leading up to the day she died.  What it told me is that she was busy!  Not bad busy, but good busy.  I felt like many of my to-do lists look a lot like that.  I smiled at the familiarity.  She was busy because everything was leading up to the events of the day she died.  That Sunday, as many of you know, two of my sisters were celebrating their First Communion and my brother and oldest sister were celebrating their Confirmation.  There was also a huge party after with family and friends that she was getting everything ready for.  It was sad when, inevitably, I flipped past the May 20th page, and the events and writing began to dwindle.  There were a few notes in the following weeks..."take Cait to preschool"..."Sarah's orchestra concert"..."so and so's meeting."  But then that was it.

Because she was gone.

In the other pocket there was even more.  Her glasses.  Her lipstick.  Her pill case with all her pills still untouched.  Her wallet with her credit cards and health insurance cards.

My personal favorite was the model of the little 10 week unborn baby that she always took everywhere with her.  She never knew when she would have the opportunity to share with others about the absolute gift of life.  I had such an amazing mom, am I right??

Then there were the little ironic pieces of the story left behind.  Like two cards from friends tucked in the pocket given to her the weekend she died.  Like the one that said,

Dear Rutherford family,
We are unable to join you, but would like to offer our congratulations to you.  What a special day!  Two Confirmations, two Holy Communions, Ed's birthday, and Trish and Ed's anniversary is a lot to celebrate!  Have a happy, happy day!

And that my friends, was the day she died.  Every ounce of celebration turned to absolute mourning.

I miss her so much.  I have cried a lot since discovering this piece of her life.  I am touching what she touched.  I am reliving parts of her final days.  My heart breaks all over again.  And I know my heart will never stop breaking.  It comes over and over in waves.

Motherhood seems to have only made it harder.  I love my children so very, very much.  So much it hurts.  And with every interaction I have with them, I realize to the full extent what I am missing out on.  No one loves like a mother.  No one hurts for me the way I hurt for my children.

And the truth is that it makes me sad.

I know we all have a story.  And we all have our paths to sanctity and our roads of suffering.  And this is mine.  Sometimes I am able to embrace it.  But other times the pain takes over.

I remind myself at times like these that it is a gift to have been loved so ferociously, even if the earthly love wasn't for long.  I saw a mother and daughter having a garage sale last weekend and another wave hit me.  They just looked like they were having fun and enjoying time together and laughing.  I longed for that.  I almost approached them and told them what a beautiful gift they have.  I restrained...but I thought it!

Above all I thank God for these little pieces of my mother that He continues to expose me to.  She was wonderful.  And even though she isn't here anymore, I still get to call her mine!

This was taken probably 5 years ago when Cole and I went to visit my mom's grave.

Postpardum Craziness

Now that you are all caught up on Beckett's birthstory, it is time to ramble about the craziness that followed after.

Cole and I had hoped with such a difficult pregnancy that once I delivered thigns would finally be better.  I would be healthy, my body would start healing, and the worst would be behind us.

I wish I could say that was the case, but in many ways, delivery was just the beginning of more medical issues.

Unfortunately, even though only 4 months ago, everything has already jumbled into a blur and I can't remember much of the details.  So, I will do my best to just give a little recap.

While in the hospital, and probably the first week at home, I was still in excruciating pain due to my pelvis and sacrum issues.  Walking was still extremely difficult and painful.  Breastfeeding was also an issue, as it always is for me, but luckily this time I was under no misguided belief that it would go better.  I knew how terrible it would be and didn't set my hopes up for anything gelse.  Good thing I didn't, too, because once again it was very rough.  Beckett did latch better then any of his siblings and that was a true blessing.  But the pain was excruciating and once again, like with Felicity, I had to take Percocet around the clock just to continue with breastfeeding.  I hate having to do that, but I always say that if a month on pain meds means I get to nurse my babe for a year or longer, then it is worth it.

Tavian meeting his baby brother for the first time.  He was still calling him "Rocca" :)

Grammy snuggling with two of her Grandbabies

So happy to be reunited with my little ones again!

I'm pretty sure Felicity was most excited about seeing Mommy again!

Unfortunately I couldn't move at all because of the pain but Cole was able to put both of them
up on the bed with me so I could give them loves!

A week after delivery I was having really bad abdominal pain.  Standing up straight was hurting and it was very, very tender to the touch.  I honestly thought at first that it might be constipation...especially because percocet can make that worse.  Thankfully I finally decided to go in and see a Dr., and after a pelvic exam (which by the way is super miserable so soon after delivery!), they told me that I had a uterine infection.  Not fun at all.  I also had to have my blood drawn multiple times which I am admittedly not a fan of!

One of our first nights home Amy, Dave (her now fiancé), and Elissa all came to have dinner
and meet the new addition.  So glad to have had this time with them and that we got to meet Dave!

Breastfeeding honestly didn't get better until 6 weeks.  Six straight weeks of constant, horrible pain while nursing.  I think with Felicity it was at least 8 weeks though so there was some improvement.  My milk supply was great this time as well so that was good.  I think two...or maybe 3 weeks in I got a double breast infection.  If you have never had one than you don't know that I mean it when I say it feels like you could just keel over and die.  I have had a breast infection before and even though I know it is bad, you still forget just how horrible it is until you are experiencing another one.  I also had a plugged duct on and off for weeks but thankfully was able to keep those from turning into infections.

The last, horrible hurrah started probably around 4 or 5 weeks postpartum.  In the evenings around 7, right as I was getting ready to start relaxing for the night, I would start having horrible stomach aches.  I started to feel nauseous and just really sick and unsure if I would throw up or not.  This started happening every few days.  I would be fine and then out of nowhere...bam!  Super sick!  Cole and I both thought it was really weird and didn't know what to make of it.
After a week or two the pain started to come every single night...and sometimes during the day.  It was so excruciating that I couldn't sleep...couldn't even watch tv.  I would just lay there with my eyes closed trying to relax because I was clenched so tightly from the pain.  I would just pray that I would fall asleep.  The only even minor pain relief I would get is from a super hot bath.  Even then the pain didn't really go away, it just seemed like I numbed my body enough to have some relief.  This is around the time that I would start puking from the pain.  Overall it was a horrible experience.  There were many times that Beckett's middle of the night feedings were in the bathtub because the pain was too horrible for me to be anywhere else.
I realized from my own research that it was most likely my gallbladder.
(on a side note, I actually ended up in the emergency room 2 months after Felicity's birth with similar pain to this, but they did an ultrasound on my gallbladder and said there were no stones and it looked fine so they sent me on my way.  I think they officially called it heartburn and gave me some Prilosec.  Looking back I'm pretty sure it really was issues with my gallbladder..not with stones, but with it's function!)
This time they took more blood to check if it was likely I had stones, and everything came back normal.  But they said it may still not be functioning well.  I had a hydascan to check my gallbladder's function and it was only functioning at 17%.  It is supposed to be a minimum of 45%...so clearly that was the issue.  So, as much as I didn't want to, and as much as I tried to find an alternative, I ended up having surgery to remove my gallbladder around 6 weeks postpartum.  It was a very difficult, stressful time!

In the recovery room immediately after surgery.  I was pretty groggy but Cole and
my Dad came to be with me and I was so glad to have them there.  Cole brought me yummy Berry Blendz :)

I had the surgery on a Thursday morning and Cole was already back to work on Monday.  In retrospect we should have planned for much more time to recover...it was actually a really painful recovery and it was really hard not having Cole off of work to help out for longer.

All of my incisions from the surgery.  Not too bad when you think that they actually removed an organ!
Recovering at home in bed.  Felicity continually asked to see my "owies" and was always there to snuggle
and give me lots of loves and kisses.  She kissed my incisions a lot!

My sweet boy asked Cole if he could get me flowers to help me feel better.
He is too stinking sweet!

Things are finally getting better and I am finally starting to heal.  I still see a chiropractor every week and have to get in for massages to help with the continued recovery of my pelvis, sacrum, and ribs.  Thankfully, I am not having any stomach issues anymore.  I have heard that having your gallbladder removed doesn't always fix the problem, or that for some it brings about other issues, but praise God for me everything has gotten better!

So, that's my little drama for you!  It is amazing what all we are capable of going through.  It was so very hard but I am thankful that things are looking up, and above all, I know every. last. second. of it was worth it.
Am I right?!?

Already it feels like life couldn't "be" without this little man in it.  I look at him all the time and just sit praising God that I get to be his Momma.  God is good and little ones truly make it all worth while!

Taves 4th Birthday

Tavian turned 4 on March 7th.
Do I seriously have a 4 year old??  That is just crazy talk!

We had a celebration with his friends a few weeks after his actual birthday.  He was super happy that my sister's family was able to come from Gillette to celebrate with us.  Tave was especially excited to have Ariana there (his bff!)
My sister's family stayed with us at our house.  It made for a very crazy time, but a wonderful time as well

Tavian, Ariana, Emily, Felicity, and you can see just a little of Addy's face towards the bottom right.
Here they all are watching Frozen together.  They all love that movie and they were all singing along with the different songs!  Even the dolls are watching ;)

Tave's gymnastics party was a huge success!  Cole and I were like kids in a candy store! (but seriously, it was my childhood dream to be a gymnast!  No, i never even took a gymnastics class, but I could do quite the round off and was super excited when i learned how to do a one handed cartwheel! lol)

I  hate when I can't rotate the picture!

Smiling with my Goddaughter because I took her to get her ears pierced.  She did awesome!!

What I Wore Sunday

Happy Sunday!

Today was a crazy day!  The whole weekend was a whirlwind, actually.
While I was nursing Beckett last night I saw some pictures on Facebook from our dear friend, Nathan, getting ordained.  We had actually really wanted to attend the ordination but had completely spaced it :(
When we woke up this morning at 7 I mentioned it to Cole...he was really bummed, got up super quick, looked at the invite and saw that his first Mass would be at 8:30 am in Denver.  He announced we were going and had 20 minutes to get everyone ready and in the car.  Yikes!

We all scurried around the house as fast as we could and luckily we made it and were only 10 minutes late!
It was so good getting to be there and supporting Father Nathan at such an important moment in his life.  The church was beautiful and the music and choir were breathtaking.  I wish I had taken pictures but we were too busy trying to manage the kiddos.

You're looking at the sweetest baby boy in the world!
Cardigan:  Old Navy
Jeans:  Maurices
White Tank:  Wal-Mart
Necklace:  Charming Charlies
Wedge Sandals: Gift from my Aunt

I was able to get a quick nap in this afternoon (thank goodness because I was exhausted!) and then we headed to Johnstown for my brother-in-laws 30th surprise birthday party.  It was great getting to see family and let the kiddos play with their cousins.  We all came back worn out...Tave and Beckett were asleep pretty instantly when we got in the car!

Hope you all had a wonderful Sunday!

A Hard Day

Let me tell you about today...

it is hard.

It has been such a hard day...and a hard week.  Maybe even a hard month.  At least that is how it feels in this moment.

There is so much joy that comes with being a mom.  It is a blessing and I feel so lucky to get to have these children.

But it is also hard.  It is so very hard sometimes.

It doesn't help that I have been in a no good, very bad mood.  I don't know exactly the cause either.  I guess it is just a funk.  The lack of sleep isn't helping.  The extra crazy stress in life right now isn't helping.

I decided to start up my massage business again this week and oh man, it has really added to my plate.  Cole has also started finishing the basement.  We had to move Tavian and Felicity into the same room so that I could get my massage room up and running.  Tavian and Felicity have also both been sick this week.  And I think Beckett's teeth are bothering him because he hasn't been nursing well at all.  And we are having a garage sale on Saturday.  And...and...and...

See what I mean?  That is a lot.  A lot all at once.  And it feels like I can't hack it.

I want to get my massage business up and running.  I really, really do.  I enjoy giving massages and I am excited about the new adventure.  But sometimes it feels like I can't do both.  It feels like there isn't enough of me to go around.  Or sometimes it feels like it won't be worth it.  Like all of the extra stress and work won't be worth the outcome.  Can anyone else relate?  Being a mom is tough and when your plate is already full, it can seem foolish to add more.

Today I am crumbling under the pressure.  I don't even want to open my mouth because it feels like I have nothing good to say.  That isn't fair to the kiddos.  I can't tell you how many times today I have actively tried to keep my mouth shut because I am terrified of what might come out.  And if the horrible does happen to escape...then I deal with the guilt.

I think as moms we are often shy away from showing the difficulties that come with being a mom because we never want that to be the overarching picture.  And that is true.  I never want to scare anyone from the vocation of motherhood.  I never want to paint these blessings as a burden.  But, I want to be truthful.  It is silly and unrealistic for any mom to pretend that it is always sunshine and roses.  And the truth is that it doesn't do any other moms any good either.  The last thing a mom wants to hear when she is having a bad day is that every other mom's life is perfect!  And too often that is what is being portrayed.  My life is good.  My children are wonderful. I am truly blessed.  But I am choosing to be honest.  And raw.  The truth is that today is hard.  And that is ok.  And it's ok if today is hard for you, too.

As a mom I have to keep reminding myself that these moments are fleeting and that tomorrow will be here soon enough.  The hard of this moment will pass away.  The kisses from little lips and the hugs from little arms will shower me with love.  And we will all make it to tomorrow.

I think I'm ready for tomorrow!

What I Wore Sunday: Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!

Could you imagine a better way to start the day?  So in love with this snuggle bug and it was such a special morning.

I actually didn't get a great full length picture of my outfit today.  Sorry...but don't worry, you aren't missing much.  It is snowing again.  Seriously?  Yes, seriously!  Snow and Mother's Day just don't mix and the cold weather doesn't really lend to cute outfits.  Know what I'm saying?!

Anyway, I have had a wonderful day.  Cole and the kids made me a very sweet Mother's Day card.  We also decided to go to Longmont early this morning and meet Cole's mom and step-dad at the 8am mass.  It made for an early morning for us, but it was a treat getting to spend the morning with them.

And guess what else my kids got me on this fabulous Mother's Day?  They behaved wonderfully at Mass.  Cole and I were shocked...super proud and happy...but shocked!  Beckett pooped again, of course, because there is just something about being in church that makes him poop.  It happens every.single.Sunday!  (And every time I am at adoration too!)

After Mass we all headed to Panera (of course!).  It was actually a wonderful place to go because it wasn't too busy and we had a nice, relaxing time.

There is a huge American Furniture Warehouse in Longmont so we stopped there on the way home to look around.  I have been wanting a swing/rocking chairs for the porch and they had some nice ones.  We didn't buy anything yet because we wanted to take some measurements first.  The kids had a blast running around and trying out all the different furniture.

And I even got a massage for Mother's Day ;)

This is always a hard day for me.  Every year I think it won't be so bad...after all it is just another day...and every year the sting of not having my mom hurts more then I expect.  I have more reflections about this that I hope to share later this week.

In the meantime, I hope all of you had an amazing Mother's Day!  I know that looking at my three blessings helps me realize just how lucky I truly am!

What I Wore Sunday and Answer Me This

Linking up with WIWS and Answer Me This

Dress: Ross
Sandals: Target
Necklace: Charming Charlies
(I wore a jean jacket with it because it was actually still pretty chilly when we left the house for 8am Mass.

Someone else looked awfully adorable this Sunday so I included her as well! :)
Dress: Zulily
Flower: Adorable Girl Boutique (I will be
blogging more on this soon!)

1. Are you becoming your mother?

Truth be told, I can't say for certain...but I hope so! :)  As many of you know, my mother passed away when I was three so what I know of her comes from the letters she wrote, the stories I have heard, and all of the home videos I thankfully have of her.  I don't have a logical reason to say I know her, but I feel that I do.  I feel like I am like her.  People tell me that all the time and it makes my heart happy.  She was simply the best!

2. Coffee or tea?

Coffee!  But only foofy coffee...like white mochas, or frappachinos...I have never actually made coffee at home.  Is that bad to admit??  I do like chai tea, but other then that I have to choke tea down.

3. What foreign country would you like to visit?
I would love to visit Ireland.  My Mom's maiden name is McCormick..does it get more Irish then that??  I have always thought it looked so beautiful and I have heard great things from friends who have been.

4. Do you cry easily?

Yes, I do.  I'm super emotional!

5. How often do you wear heels?

Not enough!  If it were up to me and my body could hack it, I would wear them all the time.  I have a closet full of them that unfortunately dont' get worn very often.  Motherhood kind of put a stop to it.  Who wants to be carting around kiddos and chasing after them in high heels?  That is definitely a disaster waiting to happen!

6. Do you play an instrument?

Yes, I sing and I play guitar.  I also used to play the clarinet in school and I can dabble on the piano.  I can't believe I just said "dabble"!
